A Short History of Plumbing
The term plumber is derived from the Latin word “plumbum” which means lead, as the first forms of plumbing involved wood but were later constructed out of lead. Plumbers were skilled lead workers who fitted and repaired the system for water distribution, dealing with everything involving water supply and waste.
By the 4th century, educated Romans did not understand anything about bacteria and the causes of disease. Hence, their entire sanitation system consisted of emptying and refilling water in their public baths once a day.
On the other hand, the Greeks did not like the idea of public baths and considered warm water to be unmanly. They would stand in a polished marble bowl and a servant would pour cold water over their heads.
Eventually, after the fall of the Roman Empire, perfumes and oils started to replace bathing. The focus was put on hiding body odours rather than keeping clean.
Around the beginning of the 18th century, baths started to return to their former glory. It was then that people slowly started to realise the connection between being healthy and keeping clean.
